The Bahamas is an island nation located in the Caribbean with over 700 islands and islets and is a high-income country with a GDP of 12.425 billion USD in 2018. The Bahamas supports a small agricultural sector that accounts for 2.3% of the economy; the main agricultural and fisheries products are vegetables, citrus fruits and seafood. The Bahamas also has an industrial sector responsible for 7.7% of GDP, which includes a diverse manufacturing industry that produces cement, salt, pharmaceuticals, and rum. The largest component of the Bahamian economy is the service sector, which is primarily comprised of the tourism industry. In the Bahamas, tourism is responsible for roughly 50% of GDP, with over seven million visitor arrivals in 2019 alone. In particular, there exists numerous startups working towards the sustainable use of ocean resources, including breeding heat resistant coral species and conducting marine plastic debris research and public outreach.
